Tip toeing through the cloud

Ben Ward, Field CTO UK&I at Recast, argues that despite years of cloud adoption, organizations still depend on a vast and growing number of traditional Windows applications that require ongoing management and governance. In this Computing Security article, he challenges the assumption that SaaS would eliminate the complexity of application management, noting that many businesses now face an expanding inventory of unique applications that can increase risk if left unchecked.

Excerpt: The number one way to make sure your apps aren’t the downfall of your impressively architected cloud kingdom is to make sure you can answer ‘yes’ to the following questions, he states:

  • Are apps updated as soon as the vendor releases an update for a critical vulnerability? (attack vector)
  • Do users only have access to the apps they need and nothing extra? (reduced attack surface)
  • Can I monitor which apps are actively being used so I can govern them? (also attack surface)
