Unica is one of the largest technical service providers in the Netherlands, employing about 4,400 people across more than 40 locations. The company designs, builds, manages, and maintains technical installations and digital infrastructure for buildings, IT/OT and industrial environments, and combines craftsmanship with the latest technologies to realize their clients’ ambitions.
Its services span building services engineering, energy and sustainability solutions, industrial automation, fire safety, security, and IT infrastructure and consultancy. Unica serves a wide range of sectors—including healthcare, education, government, industry, and data centers—and focuses strongly on innovation, smart buildings, and the energy transition.
The challenge
The Unica Group is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and continuous growth. Over time, multiple acquisitions had resulted in a highly diverse application landscape, with systems and applications co-existing across the organization.
While this diversity reflected Unica’s growth, it also introduced complexity. Application installation and updates were often handled locally, without central coordination or a structured update cycle. As a result, this approach no longer aligned with Unica’s increasingly strict security requirements and created potential risks across thousands of workspaces.
Unica needed a way to regain control—without limiting flexibility for users.
The vision
With Project Sun Valley, Unica set out to redesign its digital workspace foundation. The goal was clear:

The solution: Recast Application Workspace
Unica designed and implemented a modern, secure workspace based on Recast Application Workspace.
The first step was rationalizing the application landscape. By removing unnecessary complexity and standardizing applications, Unica created a more transparent and manageable environment.
With Application Workspace, Unica introduced a user-friendly platform that allows employees to install and update applications independently, while IT retains full control over security, policies, and lifecycle management.
This balance between autonomy and governance enables Unica to respond quickly to changing business needs without compromising stability or security.

- 49 locations across the Netherlands
- Up to 200 workspaces deployed per day
- Centralized application delivery via the Unica Application Library with 300 standard and custom applications

By using Application Workspace and its satellite capabilities, applications are now centrally managed, updated, and distributed from a single platform, dramatically increasing efficiency and consistency across the organization.
